Varsity baseball wraps up season

by Tyler Thompson

The varsity boys baseball season was filled with many ups and downs. The team finished with a record of 10-13. Some games went really well for the Knights. Other games, it seemed like they could not throw a strike. Some games were incredibly close. These included games where the Knights would start off hot and nearly relinquish the lead. Many times, Greenfield would find a way to pull out a win. The final game of the Knight’s regular season was against Wayne Country Day. Although the Knights lost this game, they found a one-two punch in Harrison Batchelor and Tristan Stancil in pitching.

In the first game of the postseason, the Knights played North Hills Christian. In this game, North Hills scratched one run in the third and boomed for six in the fourth.

At this time, they were throwing a perfect game. Coach Johnson told his team they would need to hit their way back into the game.

All of a sudden, the perfect game was broken. One thing led to another, and the bases were loaded. North Hills decided to make a pitching change and Greenfield quickly scored four runs.

At this point, the bases were still loaded and Tristan Stancil came up to bat. This was exactly the situation Tristan could have dreamed of. Tristan did his traditional feet slide, which he does prior to every at bat. He loaded up and rocketed the ball.

Off of this ball and an error, Tristan Stancil was able to hit in three runners and score himself.

In the sixth inning, North Hills could not scratch a run and Greenfield scratched one more when it was their turn to bat. In the seventh, North Hills needed at least two runs to keep their playoff hopes alive. Greenfield eliminated these hopes and pulled off the come from behind win. While the team was excited, Coach Johnson reminded the team they would have to go to Kerr Vance the next day.

When game time rolled around to play Kerr Vance, the Knights were hopeful. They knew they had been beaten earlier in the season and would need to play their best to win this game.

Unfortunately, this did not happen. Kerr Vance quickly took the lead and eventually hit a grand slam that sealed the game. Still, the Knights had one more chance to try to claw their way back into it. The bench was trying to hype up the batters. Unfortunately Kerr Vance’s pitcher fed off of this energy. Once he struck out Lee Powell, he waived him good bye. The Knight’s still cheered on their next batter. Harrison Batchelor struck out trying to pull back his bat. This was met with more jeers from the pitcher. Josh Brown was the final at bat.

Unfortunately, nothing came of this at bat and the pitcher barked at Josh. This was certainly not the way Greenfield wanted to end the season.

Immediately after the game, Greenfield was already making preparations for next season. Coach Johnson said he was going to host workouts for the team. Gavin Price said he hopes to do “better next year and have a winning record next year… we’re lifting everyday… we got to get right.” How they prepare for next year will be a huge part in the outcome of their season.
