V Boys soccer off to good start

by Sophia Graham

The Greenfield Varsity Boys Soccer team is off to a great start this year.

They kicked off the 2023 season with a win at the Doctor Robert Stone Memorial Tournament on August 10-12 with a record of 3-0. Goals were scored by Eli Farris, Cooke Rhodes, Simon Quinn, Landon Coolbaugh, Quintin Blake, Henry Daniel, and Noah Wright. Since then, despite an excellent effort in their next three games, they fell short against two very challenging teams.

According to Varsity Boys’ coach, Justin Wilkinson, the Knights have played very well in all their games so far. He is excited to see them develop this year. In his words, “... [the boys] are eager to learn, they want to play, and they want to do it the right way.”

Wilkinson enjoys coaching the team immensely, especially because he has many new players to work with this year. Eight varsity soccer players graduated last year, and now seven to eight starters in every game are sophomores, freshmen, and even eighth graders. This is very unusual for Greenfield, but Wilkinson says the players are “stepping up to the role and... filling in those shoes.”

According to Wilkinson, the team’s biggest strength is their defense, but as the season continues, he is hoping they can turn that defense into a dominating offense as well.
