Amid the Palestine and Israel conflict, the United Nations (UN) and, most notably, South Africa have accused Israel of genocide during the war in Gaza. However, this case could take several years to conclude. The case of the Israeli genocide has been taken to the UN’s highest court.
According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, 23,000 Palestinian people have been killed during the conflict. They have said 70% of the people who have been killed have been women and children. Mr. Benoit, Greenfield School’s upper English teacher who also teaches AP Human Geography, said on the matter, “I'm not saying that Israel is acting in a way with Genocide. The United Nations might be looking at this as a possible instance of Genocide. As the UN might be interpreting, you are not only trying to destroy who is attacking you... but also destroying the ability of those who are attacking you to reproduce and live on as a people, culture, and nation.”
Ten people responded to a poll asking, on a scale of one to ten, how much they pay attention to the conflict. Four respondents said that they pay attention to the conflict at a five, and three people gave the response an eight. 90 % of the respondents also think the war has led to human rights conflicts overall. According to the answers in the poll, some believe human rights violations have come from “Mass killings” and “Torture, unlawful blockades, bombings of civilian centers such as hospitals,” and one commented that “It has forced many civilians to migrate from their homes due to fear for their lives and live in inhumane conditions.”
In response to the allegations, in court, Israel said that their people had not committed genocide and that their actions had been in complete defense of its people, according to VOA news. Israel has also stated that South Africa is being hypocritical because they had one of the biggest cases that turned the world upside down, which was about South Africa’s apartheid system.
