The critically acclaimed company Meta, previously known as Facebook, has begun production on the Metaverse, an online world for anyone's enjoyment. But what is this metaverse and how will it affect people of all ages? Is it all just a ploy for money or is it truly something made to benefit humanity?
To understand the Metaverse we must go back to the start of digital worlds. Virtual Reality, also known as VR, is a wildly popular tool used for students, gamers, people in the military, and even doctors! As the name implies, it’s all an online network which immerses you in a different world.
But the difference between VR and the Metaverse is that the Metaverse would have you constantly interacting with others. Currently, VR is seen as a tool to help people. However it’s extremely likely that in the coming years it will revolve around this metaverse and we will be able to do anything in it!
While this all sounds nice, isn’t it a bit much saying we can already play by ourselves? Well, Meta disagrees; they think that we must interact with other people in VR for true immersion and envision a future similar to the movie “Ready Player One” which takes place in a metaverse of sorts. Besides what I previously mentioned, it’s entirely likely the Metaverse will be used as a place of trade using cryptocurrencies and NFTs. One Meta executive has voiced that NFTs will become the real-estate of the Metaverse, where you’ll be able to visit and interact with them. Its not irregular to for a company to set big goals but this is catastrophic doing this is akin to inventing a computer in the 1800’s: quite preposterous.
So what does this mean for you, your average day civilian? While we still aren’t entirely sure, I can see something like Covid-2020 happening, where we have online classes and jobs, which wouldn’t be hard saying Meta’s newer VR headsets will be including face tracking. These online jobs would likely be an entirely new idea that many would struggle to grapple with, with many likely questioning how they should be paid or their hours and so much more.
I’m not sure how this all will end but I’ll be eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Meta-Verse and until then I think I’ll enjoy my time with my friends, my family, and my dogs in the real world.
