The Netflix Show Everyone is Talking About

by Jordan Corts

If you are like me, you may have recently stumbled upon a show called Squid Game on Netflix and may also be wondering what it is about. I aim to answer that question and explain why it is so popular.

Squid Game was released in mid-September and, according to Netflix, has gotten a whopping 142 million views since, in addition to a reported 17 billion views across other platforms. While I will keep this article spoiler free, I would like to praise both the writers of and actors in Squid Game for creating such a thrilling plot that is full of raw emotion. The basic idea of the story is that 456 adults, all of whom are in debt, are invited to participate in a game where they can win a large sum of money. However, they discover a horrible truth about the game that they cannot escape.

Besides the high view count, the show has also inspired a storm of fans to purchase products used in production, such as white Vans® sneakers, which recently have spiked in sales. Other brands have profited from the popularity of Squid Game as well and the show’s actors have grown in popularity and recognition. Some of the actors’ social media presences have grown by upwards of 23 million new followers. It is almost definite that a second season of Squid Game will be released due to Season 1’s popularity and huge profit (over $900 million on a $21 million budget). Like many other fans, I’ll be eagerly awaiting Season 2 or a spin-off of the show.
