On October 22, 2023, the House voted for a new Speaker. All 209 Democrats voted for Hakeem Jeffries; Hakeem is the party's house leader, but this was not enough to make it to the 215 minimum to win.
Republican Representative Mike Johnson won the majority of the votes with 220, surpassing the 215 required to win. Johnson is a very little-known politician from Louisiana. Mike Johnson was the fourth person nominated for speaker in three weeks after Steve Scalise, Jim Jordan, and Tom Emmer.
A survey was sent out to 10 citizens asking if they supported the new speaker, and the majority said yes, with 75% saying they supported him.
I interviewed Connor Daniel about the election, and when asked about Mike Johnson, Connor stated, “I think Johnson was the best candidate for the job because of his confidence, and he's a Republican, and I'm glad he won.” Mike Johnson has big plans for his term and has already stated, “The People's House is back in business.”
