Spain wins Women's World Cup

by Quintin Blake

On August 20, 2023, the Spanish Women’s National Team made history as they won their first trophy in the Women’s World Cup (WWC). The last time Spain won the World Cup was their Men’s team in 2010.

Although it has been a long time since they brought home the trophy, their journey to win ended in a close game as they defeated England 1-0.

The Spanish scored their lone goal off the left foot of Olga Carmona, which Mariona Caldentey assisted. The goal came in the first half at the 29th minute, but it was enough for Spain’s women’s national team to make history as they won the WWC.

Greenfield Spanish teacher Sr. Luis Giron, who is a long-time Real Madrid fan and an avid soccer fan, was impressed by the play of Spain and their path to victory.

“[Spain] has very good players… I think they have potential even while they have a very young team (Paralluelo being 19 years old) but can repeat the process,” Giron said. When asked who he thought was going to win at the beginning of the World Cup, he responded with either “USA, Japan, England, and Spain.”

Sr. Giron knew Spain had a strong upside going into the tournament despite Japan being a strong team and the USA being historically successful.

During the celebration after the game, Luis Rubiales, the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, forced a kiss onto Spain’s Jennifer Hermoso on the lips, and Hermoso gave no consent for the kiss. This kiss sparked lots of controversy in the country of Spain and the Royal Spanish Football Federation.
