Seniors enjoy rec league basketball

by Jack Adair

Senior year can be full of stress and applications, but for this group of seniors at Greenfield, they wanted to enjoy their last year as a class and do something different. The group created a basketball team at Wilson Parks and Recreation league and became known as G-field.

The team is led by Lee Powell, and Phil Pace who both took the role of the team's coaches, and the team captain and founder of the team, Charlie Fogelman. The team consists of 10 seniors and one sophomore who all love to play basketball and be around one another.

T he G-field boys, made up of Charlie Fogelman, Lee Powell, Hanson Ngo, Nick Wester, Gavin Price, Nathan Lozevski, Garrison Wester a sophomore, Porter Wells, Veer Patel, Lawson O’Hara who are all seniors at Greenfield. Parker Eatmon is also a part of the group from Rocky Mount Academy. The team is currently at the top of the league standings with a 2-1 overall record.

Their last game against the “Ghouls” was a thrilling finish. With 12 minutes left, senior guard Lawson Ohara got a technical foul which really fired up his teammates. Then, with 8 seconds on the clock and G-field up 2, the Ghouls had a chance to win the game, but that’s when senior captain, Charlie Fogelman, stepped up and got a steal to seal the game off as a G-field victory. Nick Wester and Gavin Price both had a strong game, combining for 9 points and 9 rebounds, while Veer Patel and Hanson Ngo both chipped in with 2 points. The MVP of the game was Sophomore Garrison Wester who finished with 14 points going ¾ from three and finally, the workhorse of the group Nate Lozevski finished with 11 points and 5 rebounds.

Coach Pace said in the post-game interview when asked about his thoughts on the game, “We knew this was going to be a tough game, but our guys stepped up when it mattered most. I'm proud of how they battled and never gave up.”

Their most recent game was against The Ball Hogs at Reid Street for a 6pm tipoff on Monday January 23rd. Sadly the boys lost their first game of the season to The Ball Hogs 53-48, since some of their players were absent. The team looks to finish the season strong and put the county of Wilson on notice.
