by Avery Williams

The year 2023 has faced an upswung in the number of gun violence and school shootings in the US. As trends continue, 2023 could be facing over 400 school shootings beating 2022’s 237, according to a source. Each day a close approximate of 12 children die from gun violence and another 32 are shot and injured. Since 1999, more than 338,000 students in the US have experienced gun threats at school. In 2022, 34 students and adults died while more than 43,000 were exposed to gunfire.

Since January 1st, 2023, the US has faced at least 163 mass shootings leading to more mass shootings than days in 2023. Mass shootings are defined as an incident in which four or more victims are shot or killed. There have been 14 shootings in schools resulting in injuries or death this year. As well as more than 200 school shootings since 2018.

DaShanne Stokes responds to the violence and shootings by saying, “violence is not a Democratic or Republican problem. It’s an American problem, requiring an American solution.”
