Ruth Bader Ginsburg stamp

By Alexis Johnson

Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a member of the Supreme Court Justice from 1993 until she died in 2020. Justice Ginsburg was known for fighting for the rights of women, minorities, and the LGBTQ community. A stamp has recently been released in her honor.

On October 1, 2023, the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery held a ceremony honoring Justice Ginsburg with a postage stamp. The stamp has had multiple types of reactions. Out of eight Greenfield Upper School students, two of them said it was cute, two people said they loved it, two others said that it was a great honor to Justice Ginsburg, and one person said it was detailed and interesting. When asked about the stamp, one of Greenfield’s faculty members, Mr. Benoit, stated, “She’s staring into my soul.”

As time passes, more stamps of different impactful historical figures will likely be made. When asked about who they would like to see on stamps in the future, the eight surveyed students, who were asked who they would like to see on stamps in the future, one said they would like an American Charles Darwin stamp, two mentioned different former U.S presidents, one mentioned Keith Haring, an American artist known for his drawings encouraging AID’s awareness, another mentioned Greta Thunberg, a Swedish climate activist, with a separate person saying more female icons. At the same time, the last two did not have anyone in mind.
