From recent articles written about the Ukraine and Russia issue in our class, we have learned that the events have escalated. Russia has obviously been the more aggressive country in this war, and they have been accused of committing many war crimes. The charge of committing war crimes is put upon a country that has killed civilians or used weapons that are not allowed to be in use during the war. Russia’s war crimes are starting to come to light and even Joe Biden has been talking about how brutal Vladimir Putin is.
Russia has made it seem like they are the big bad wolf with all of their attacks, but they are just starting to get on the bad side of more and more countries. In recent weeks, more innocent civilian casualties have occurred within Ukraine. Ukrainian forces just recently found large graves that contained many dead civilian bodies. After further examining those bodies, it was determined that most of them were shot and killed.
Another illegal action that has been discovered is the usage of cluster bombs. Cluster bombs are “bombs that release a number of projectiles on impact to injure or damage personnel and vehicles.” There was also a shocking video released several weeks ago that showed a Russian tank driving over a Ukrainian vehicle that was just going down the road.
There has also been evidence to support that there has been a usage of thermobaric explosives. Those explosives act like vacuums and suck oxygen up. In Mariupol, Ukraine. a theatre was being used as a place for protection. The Russian’s called in an airstrike on the theatre and it ended up killing around 300 innocent people.
Russia has been making aggressive actions towards Ukraine, but they have been committing war crimes along the way that could end up haunting them in the near future.
