It was the night of November 29 2021; everything was seemingly normal, with little to no irregularities, but little did the parents of students of Oxford High know that the next day would forever change their lives.
Ethan Crumbley, a seemingly normal student, had recently been gifted a gun by his parents, but his parents failed to notice underlying mental concerns. Reports note that Crumbley was seemingly a Nazi supporter with Nazi propaganda posted around his room.
Days after getting the gun, he sent a video to a friend, joking about "shooting up his school."
Tragically, four students were murdered because of this incompetency, and many others like Ethan have caused many more deaths.
In 2021, there were a whopping 34 school shootings this year alone. Though the numbers were low last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the numbers skyrocketed last year; 2021 had the most school shootings in one year since 2018.
All these factors might leave one believing that the pandemic had a lasting effect on the mental state of many students, and I tend to believe that idea.
But school shootings are not the only result of the poor mental health of students. Besides school shootings, suicides in America have also only been getting worse, which leaves both me and many other onlookers wondering why little is being done to help those who really need it.
