The Outdoor Club, headed by Alex Benoit, hosts four camping trips throughout the 2023-2024 school year. The first was from Friday, October 27, to Saturday, October 28, at Goose Creek State Park. The second is from the 9 through the 11 of November at Eno River State Park. The third is a three-night trip during Spring Break on the Mountains to Sea Trail, and the final trip is May 3 through May 5 at Mount Mitchell State Park.

The activities on these trips include miles of hiking, fishing, identifying constellations, meteor shower watching, plant and bird identification, and even some fun board games and music around the campfire.

Eight to twelve students can go on each trip, along with the chaperones. Mr. Benoit always attends along with a female chaperone.

Food options may include quesadillas, pizzas, burritos, each with a variety of meats, along with vegetables. Any specific dietary restrictions are accommodated.

It is important to bring a sleeping bag, a sleeping pad, adequate clothing depending on the season, a water bottle, and a backpack. Mr. Benoit also said it is important to have “an open mind” and “willingness to try new things.”

Mr. Benoit stated, “I think it’s an opportunity for people to push themselves, both physically and mentally, in ways they haven’t before.” This is also a chance to hang out with friends and meet new people.

Students polled said the trip was a fun new experience, and they especially loved the s’mores!
