Opinion: Travis Scott and AstroWorld

by Ethan Carraway

Travis Scott just recently had an AstroWorld concert on November 5th, where eight people tragically died while enjoying the experience. Rumors that the venue was overpacked due to people sneaking in, which caused the suffocation and death of multiple people, are spreading. The crowd surge when Scott walked out caused multiple fans to be folded and crushed under the pressure. So what really happened at the concert?

The style of the concert is what mainly contributes to crowd surge. The concert was held in a large open area with no seating and a catwalk-style stage for performers. Areas near the stage are often occupied by closely-packed attendees who form mosh pits. The number of fans that packed into this area grew to the point where there was no room for people to move and breathe. Crowd surge often occurs when the main artist takes the stage.

At the AstroWorld concert, once the opening act finished and Scott was ready to take the stage, people at the back of the crowd began to move forward in an effort to see Scott. Those who were in the front had to either endure the pain or leave the venue, ruining their experience. All of this happened while Travis was dancing around the stage and singing, ignoring the horrible things that were happening to his fans. Even when he saw that his beloved fans were getting carried away by EMS workers, he only stopped to tell the crowd to make room for around 20 seconds before cheering on the attendees with more dancing. Needless to say, the EMS workers had no time to escape with their patients and were also swept by the crowd.

Travis Scott later posted an apology video about the incident at his concert. He was so sad that he had to write a script for his video that he kept looking at to make his apology. It’s clear that Travis Scott doesn’t care about the people who keep him in business; he should be arrested for cheering on his fans, knowing that his actions could cause more chaos and death. The value of life is not something to be tampered with, and Travis Scott demonstrated the limit of how much one can get away with just because they’re famous.
