Opinion: The Re-Awakening of the Golden State Warriors

by Quintin Blake

During game 6 of the 2019 NBA finals, a star crashed, and so did the dreams of winning another ring for the Golden State Warriors: Klay Thompson suffered a torn ACL in his left knee. As he worked his way back into game shape after nursing his knee injury, Thompson tore his achilles tendon in November of 2020. With his torn achilles, he was shut down for the 2020-2021 season. However, just like his first injury, the injury will not slow him down. Thompson and the rest of the Warriors are determined to get him back within the lines during a game.

Thompson has officially been able to join his first practice as of late. He looked like his old self, hitting shots with ease, proving to himself, his coaches, and his teammates that he will be ready for a strong return, according to Nick Friedell of ESPN. Steve Kerr, head coach of the Golden State Warriors, said “Klay looked great.” Thompson is shooting like his old self, winning shooting competitions, and getting in game shape. Even though there was not a live scrimmage, he was able to come on his first day of practice and have a great start to his year.

Klay Thompson is expected to make a return as early as late December, but more likely is early 2022. Klay’s recent activity has given a gigantic boost of confidence to the Warriors, and his presence has brought a wave of positive energy to the organization.

The last time the Warriors won an NBA title was in 2018. Their last title win was when the Warriors had their most dominant team, a team that included Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant, and Draymond Green. Kevin Durant and several others have relocated to different teams, but once Klay Thompson is healthy, and with the addition of Andrew Wiggins in 2020, the Warriors will have their superpowers once again. The Warriors have also signed Andre Iguodala, who has made his way back to the team. He was the finals MVP for the warriors in 2015.

Fortunately for the Warriors, one of their biggest problems has been resolved: Andrew Wiggins finally received the COVID-19 vaccine. He is now allowed to play at the Warriors home games. The Warriors needed him to get the vaccine because he is a key factor in their games and their success.

When the Golden State Warriors are able to come together and stay healthy, they have a serious chance at bringing home yet another ring to a very successful organization. Contrary to many beliefs and predictions that the Lakers, Nets, or reigning-champion Bucks will win the NBA championship, the Warriors are a serious threat. They have the best shooting backcourt in NBA history in Curry and Thompson, great coaching from Iguodala and Coach Kerr, and great defense and team play by Green and Wiggins. Given their amazing talent, the Golden State Warriors have just as good, if not better, chance of winning the title this upcoming season.
