Op-ed: Goodbye to 2021

by Jordan Corts

2020 was one of the worst years of modern history and many looked forward to the year 2021 and prayed it would be far better than the last, but did it really live up to our expectations?

Starting off in January of 2021, the U.S. was fresh off November’s presidential election with Joe Biden being inaugurated as the President of the United States of America. Unfortunately, the Capitol was rushed that very same month, leaving the capital in shambles. Political opinions aside, it was a very mixed bag of a month with no positive developments with the Coronavirus. Further into the year around 60% of America had been vaccinated with many states, such as North Carolina, beginning to lift mandates. Sporting events made a strong attempt at returning to normal. Unfortunately it was futile, due to the habits that been brought along during Covid.

Though many of these things may sound negative, 2021 was not a terrible year entirely and in fact had many positives. One positive outlook many have decided to take on the year is the environment largely recovering and flourishing. Some endangered species even were knocked off the list, such as China’s beloved Panda. In some cases, the air quality sky-rocketed due to the vast amount of people opting to stay inside. On top of all that there were great strives made with electric vehicles which are beginning to greatly affect the environment in a positive manner. Though the reason for the environment being clean may certainly be saddening, it is one bonus that we certainly appreciate.

As to if 2021 “lived up to the hype,” I would say no; after everything that happened in 2020, people were hungry for change.

Does this mean I think 2021 was a bad year? Of course not, but we need to keep working for the future as Covid-19, politics, and the environment won't fix themselves. Though there is still far more to talk about we still have more to do before the year is done, and the new better year begins.
