Op-ed: Belichick needed Brady

by Quintin Blake

Since the New England Patriots' impressive win in the 2019 Super Bowl, Bill Belichick and the Patriots have gone a disappointing 29 - 38. After Tom Brady left the Patriots, it further showed that Bill Belichick is nothing of a coach without Brady leading his team.

Together, they won a total of six Super Bowls. Still, after Brady left the Patriots, he won one championship with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This further shows that Bill Belichick is a highly overrated coach and only gets the success he is credited with because of Tom Brady.

Although many are convinced that he is one of the best coaches, if not the best, of all time, long-time football fan and Greenfield student Dylan Carpenter said, “Bill [Belichick] is the greatest of all time because he has seven rings. Bill Belichick carried Brady to the Super Bowl wins while Andy Reid has taken Patrick Mahomes to the Super Bowl wins.” However, Assistant Head of School and Upper School Coordinator Mr. Steve Manna approached the question very organized, saying, “There are confounding variables. Bill Belichick and Brady needed each other. Brady won one without Bill Belichick. Can’t say he could have done it without him.” When asked about potential candidates for the best coach of all time, he stated, “Tomlin and his longevity and the most tenured coach in the league. They made the playoffs with no quarterback stability, which is impressive. Andy Reid has the most talented quarterback in the league, Patrick Mahomes. Andy Reid needs Mahomes and much, and Mahomes needs Reid. Tomlin is impressive because of his success in the division of the Browns, and the Ravens made the playoffs.”

Bill Belichick's career is nothing without the stars he got, like Tom Brady, tight end Rob Gronkowski, and wide receivers Julian Edelman, Brandin Cooks, and Chris Hogan. Since these players have left, Belichick has had the same opportunity to turn Mac Jones, a former Alabama star quarterback, into the next Tom Brady. Still, it did not happen because he could not train and develop the talent the Patriots have and failed to bring in quality talent. Not only did Belichick fail with Mac Jones, but he also had another opportunity to develop backup quarterback Bailey Zappe and wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster. Mac Jones did not peak in college football although some people say he did because of the professional stage of the NFL and how the games are completely different, so it was a perfect opportunity for Belichick to develop the young phenom. Even though many see that he was uncoachable and unable to be developed, the Patriots have wonderful facilities, great equipment, and an experienced coaching staff left several years after the Brady dynasty, which shows that there were more than enough resource in New England to develop Mac Jones. Since Bill Belichick was the head of the operation, he could have sent Jones to other coaches over the summer or breaks to develop Jones or bring others in. The Patriots and Bill Belichick failed to rise their young star to the NFL level.

According to the poll conducted about Bill Belichick’s career with 12 respondents, 66.7% said yes to believing Brady would have success with Belichick, 25% said no, and 8.3% said there are too many confounding variables to truly understand the potential success Brady would have had without the Patriots. In the poll, respondents also believed that Bill should be considered the best coach of all time, with four people responding this while two voted for Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach. Others replied: Don Shula, Andy Reid, Bill Cowher, and Kyle Shanahan.

Since Tom Brady has left the New England Patriots, Bill Belichick has been on the hot seat. Respondents believed that Belichick’s reputation post-Tom Brady has been unsuccessful, with 75% saying no, it was unsuccessful, and 25% saying it has been successful. Most respondents said that Tom Brady’s career was successful, and ten people responded within the range of 7-10 on the success of Brady’s career.

According to sportingnews.com, Bill Belichick’s record with Tom Brady was 249 wins with 75 losses, a win percentage of .769 (76.9%), and without Tom Brady, 84 wins and 103 losses, a win percentage of .449 (44.9%). This shows that Bill Belichick’s career is overrated, and the only accurate proper response to the best NFL coach debate is Mike Tomlin. This year alone in the 23-24 season with the third-string quarterback took the Steelers to the NFL playoffs. In addition to his latest success, Tomlin has had 17 straight seasons without a losing season and a 173-100-2 record. Tomlin has the most impressive streak in NFL history and has won two Super Bowls during his time coaching the Steelers, making him, without a doubt, the best coach ever.
