Twenty-nine-year-old Adam Robert Johnson, who is an NHL hockey player, died during a hockey game on October 28, 2023, from an ice skate to the neck. The NHL, or National Hockey League, has been around for more than 100 years, beginning in 1920. Recently, hockey fans and players have been struck by reality.
After the death of Adam Johnson, the Penguins' head coach, Mike Sullivan, has made neck guards mandatory for all their hockey players, including their club teams. The NHL is now debating if all hockey players should have to wear neck guards to prevent other deaths like Adam Johnson. Drew Lucas states, “I don’t think that I am the only one who has this opinion, but I believe that neck guards should have been used way before that dude died on the ice. This would have prevented the whole thing,” states Drew Lucas.
