Monkeypox is the current health outbreak going on in the world. It is in the same family as the smallpox causing bacteria, variola, and the symptoms are similar to smallpox symptoms, but are milder and less fatal.
The first case of Monkeypox was reported in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In July 2022 alone, there were 5,189 cases in the U.S., and in North Carolina there have been 312 cases. Right now, Washington, DC has the most cases with 30 per every 100,000 people.
Greenfield School nurse, Mrs. Dana Bachelor, said that this is a disease to worry about because of how contagious it is, and also said that we will handle Monkeypox just like we handle Covid and any other illnesses, by sending home the student who has contracted the disease and emailing the parents of students that have been exposed.
The most common symptom is a rash that looks similar to pimples or blisters. The rash can appear on any part of the body but are most common in the mouth or face area. Chills, exhaustion, and muscle aches are just a few more symptoms, which only last a few weeks, with no current cure.
Monkeypox can spread through contact with the rash, prolonged face to face contact, and touching items that have come in contact with a person with Monkeypox’s rash.
