Covid-19 was, and still is, one of the greatest devastations in modern times due to numerous small business closing, hundreds of thousands of people dying, and an agonizing quarantine.
But today, I pose the question, “Did the mega corporations and companies really get hurt by covid or did they just grow because of it?"
It’s undeniable that companies like Amazon profited off people having to order food and groceries off their websites, but what about companies that offer products and services like Uber and Tesla? Why would you ever need a car while in a worldwide pandemic?
Surprisingly, Tesla has sold almost sold two hundred thousand more cars in 2020 than they did in 2019. Still not convinced? Well, some branches of Uber had as much as a 135% growth from the prior year.
With many local restaurants and stores closing, it is leaving few other choices for everyday people to get the products and items they desire, making it the perfect chance for companies to capitalize on others' failure.
Now you may be thinking I am making Jeff Bezos and other people in similar roles out to be this maniacal villain, but you’d be surprised by the good they do as well. Mr. Bezos made shopping extremely accessible during the pandemic for a reasonable price and Tesla, an example I used earlier, is making cars that are helping save the environment. These mega corporations are going surprisingly far to help us and the earth out overall much more than they are entitled to do.
Does this mean Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk are saints who do no wrong? Of course not, but it just shows that every coin has two sides. In spite of this, please go out and shop at your local mom-and-pop shops.
