Large earthquake strikes Japan

by Addison Watson

Recently in Japan there was a horrific earthquake on News Years Day that measured up to a 7.6 magnatude. The big question about the earthquake is how it did not cause a tsunami because Japan is known to be a hotspot for tsunamis. It is all determined by the depth of the earthquake and the location.

As of January 8th, more than 160 people have died and more than 600 injured according to the New York Times. There are more than 1,300 homes that were destroyed by the earthquake. Many first responders are working to find people that are trapped, hidden, or lost in the destruction. They are also trying to identify more of the people they have found in the snow packed debris because there are more than 100 people missing.  When asked about how the earthquake affected the citizens Ms. Peele said “... it has affected every aspect of their life, communications, travel, ability to get goods, groceries and things that they need.” This earthquake has hurt the lives of many people in Western Japan and people should do their best to show the families affected some support.
