How to Survive Freshman Year: A Message for 8th Graders

by Rickayla Myles

Upper School is a big change and a new experience for all freshmen. It can also be very difficult to follow along in your new routine because there are new rules and teachers. Upper School is different than middle school, but in a good way, and you also have a little bit more freedom in high school. Because adjusting to high school can be challenging, I wanted to ask a current high schooler for some tips.

I decided to ask another freshman what tips they would give the 8th grade students, who will start high school next year. Abby Corbett, a freshman this year, said, “If you want to excel in all of your classes, you should take notes on everything you talk about in class [and] what your teacher writes on their whiteboard because it will most likely be on your quiz or test.”

She also stated, “You should also do your homework every night because you never know when a teacher will just give you a pop quiz on homework or notes from the night before.”

Another thing that you should know before going into upper school is that you should always get your work done ahead of time so your work will not pile up and become overwhelming. Abby said that “[You] need to be on top of your game because this is the year where colleges [start looking] at your grades, so that means you can have no slip ups.”
