Green Day releases new album

by Addison Watson

Green Day has just released their fourteenth studio album, Saviors, on the 19th of January 2024. Green Day is a punk rock band who has had many great hits in the late 90s and early 2000s, with hits like “American Idiot”, “Basket Case”, and “Welcome to Paradise”. They have recently released their new album, Saviors. Before the album was released, they released four songs off the album as singles, like “The American Dream is Killing Me” and “Look Ma, No Brains”.

Green Day is known for using their songwriting to voice awareness on heavy topics and problems in the world. So, it was not much of a surprise, when the first track, “The American Dream is Killing Me”, was an updated version of their hit 2004, American Idiot. The modern take on the song touches on topics such as poverty, homelessness, real- estate's misuse of power, and anti-immigration attitudes. On the fifth track, “Dilemma”, lead singer, Billie Joe Armstrong, voices his struggles with overcoming addiction and the consequences of drinking and doing drugs. Chair of the English Department, Mr. Benoit says, “Green Day has always been the most visible aspect of the contemporary punk movement, and even after their prime, they continue to bring up social issues in their songs.” Throughout all fifteen tracks on the album the band has brought awareness to issues in the world that they believe need to be addressed through catchy lyrics, rocking drumbeats, and sick guitar riffs.
