Girls basketball makes deep playoff run but comes up short

by Tyler Thompson

The Greenfield girls basketball team recently finished their season with a Final Four appearance. They finished with a winning record of 15-9. This was especially impressive because most of their players did not play basketball as their main sport.

“Our teamwork, hard work, [and] dedication really paid off,” Serenity McNair said. Although the girls did not make it to the championship game, they were proud of what they had achieved. “I think we actually surpassed our goals,” Serenity said.

In their Final Four appearance, Greenfield fell to Victory Christian Center, 78-30. Serenity McNair led the team with 19 points, but Greenfield’s efforts were outmatched by Victory Christian. A loss in this fashion is definitely not how Greenfield wanted their season to end. This loss will only further motivate the team to work hard in the off season to make it back into the Final Four next year.

Serenity McNair was a big part of the run they made. She averaged 24 points per game, and led the team in assists and steals. Beyond her stats, Serenity is a great leader on the court. She referenced comradery as something she hopes the team continues to build on from this season to next. This is very indicative of their team. They are not necessarily the most technical team, but the way they work together vaults them into the category of an elite team in their conference and division.

Next year, the team has a goal in mind.

“Getting to the same spot or further in the [tournament], but beyond that, being the best team that we can be,” said Serenity. Seeing the way they played this year and the dedication and teamwork this team has, no one doubts that they will be right back in the mix of it for the State Championship.

The key players that can make this happen are Serenity McNair (10), Darcy Dean (9), Yazi Bullock (10) and Jeallen Holland (11). These players are leaders on the team who certainly have the mindset needed to win a State Championship.

The girls this year should be proud of what they achieved, and be ready to do the same if not more next year.
