Facebook’s creator, Mark Zuckerberg, has started the creation of a new type of virtual reality that will surpass every other type currently available. This new kind of virtual reality is called Horizon and is really starting to take shape.
There are some big problems with the project, such as the cost and development, which could take years. Zuckerberg is also receiving backlash for his past scandals on Facebook with The Wall Street Journal having a Facebook files series that shows every flaw and mess-up that has ever happened.
Zuckerberg’s plan to make revenue is through virtual goods. He quotes, “People are willing to spend $80 billion plus annually on virtual goods”. It seems that Zuckerberg is trying to take a hold of the microtransaction market by making the main selling point the ability to customize your avatar in any way you desire. Most modern games and websites that have avatars have microtransactions that allow customization through the process of buying the game’s currency and using it to purchase things.
In fact, Zuckerberg is so confident in his ability to sell this game, he purchased a game company called PlayGiga, a company from Madrid that bases its games on cloud gaming, or games that are stored virtually instead of on a physical copy disc or cartridge. He also purchased Microsoft Corp., which owns Xbox and has its own type of virtual reality. The final company he purchased was ZeniMax Media Inc. Testing has started for Horizon, and it seems to be going well with progress being put into it every day.
Will Horizon become the next big thing, or will society move on before it even has a chance?
