On September 22, the Greenfield Varsity boys suffered a loss to the New Bern Epiphany Falcons. The game with a 3-2 loss, with goals being scored by Matt Kirby (#2) and Nathan Lozevski (#8).

The boys, however, did not play as well as they should’ve. They seemed overconfident from their previous game with the Falcons and the day before win. They had previously become victorious against Wayne Country Day, our rivals, winning 3-1.

I interviewed three people from the team to gather their input and viewpoints on the game and what was going through their heads. Coach Wilkinson, senior and captain Nathan Lozevski, and senior Harrison Bachelor.

(AW: Avery Williams, CW: Coach Wilkinson, NL: Nathan Lozevski, HB: Harrison Bachelor)

AW:What was your overall view on the game?

CW: It wasn’t our best. We know we can play better but nothing was working for us.

NL: My overall view would consist of a disappointment, but it was an opportunity for us to get better and learn from our mistakes.

HB: Overall I thought the game was horrific. The team was not focused on the game at hand.

AW: How were you feeling at halftime versus after the game?

CW: Being down 2-1 at half time in a game where we won 5-0 the first time is never a good thing. We knew we weren’t playing well. It just takes a different mentality for us to change the outcome.

NL: At halftime I felt slightly rattled since we were losing to a team that I know we could beat. After the game I felt disappointed. There’s a lot that could have been done differently for us to change the result.

HB: At halftime, I was upset. It’s my senior year, and the fact people were not trying frustrated me. After the game I was furious. I wasn’t happy with my performance whatsoever so until I got over that, nothing was going to get better.

AW: What could the team have done differently?

CW: Just keep possession and not trying to go forward every chance we got. We needed to create chances by moving the ball more.

NL: We could’ve taken the game more seriously. We came off a high from beating our rivals the previous day and felt more confident than ever. However, that overconfidence is what lead us to lose, as we underestimated our opponent.

HB: The team could’ve played with a bit more enthusiasm. We were dead and not excited. We underestimated this team because of our performance the last time we played them.

AW: What will you take from this game to the rest of the regular season and playoffs?

CW: We now know our worst and we can only go upwards from here. Everything is in the past and now we can use that as a lesson learned.

NL: We can take that game as an opportunity for us to be better by taking every game more seriously now, more than ever. We’ll work even harder now to make sure we’re ready before every game, regardless of who the opponent may be, as we move on into the playoffs

HB: Not underestimate any team we play, as well as play to the best of our ability.

The Varsity boys are currently 13-3-1 as of October 3, 2022.
