Boy's basketball ends season as state runner-up

by Drew Lucas

Greenfield’s varsity boys had a great season; they finished the regular season 26-10 and were ranked #3 in 2-A schools. They began to get ready for their state championship run. In the first round of the playoffs, greenfield played Freedom Christian of Fayetteville, and the final score was 103-49 giving Greenfield the first-round win.

In the second round of the playoffs, Greenfield played Fayetteville Academy , and the final score was 73-50, pushing Greenfield to the 3rd round of the playoffs. In the 3rd game, Greenfield got the game they wanted, and played against their rival Wayne Country Day; the final score was 74-61, and Greenfield advanced on to the State Championship Game.

The State Championship game took place at Forsyth Country Day School at 3 p.m. on a Saturday. Everyone on the team was excited and locked in and ready to play. All of Greenfield came out to support the varsity in the State Championship Game.

Greenfield was facing off against The Burlington School with a regular season record of 19-15. The game was close the whole game, but Greenfield was in foul trouble the whole game, which was a problem. Greenfield was not making a lot of shots either.

The Burlington School lead going into halftime. When Greenfield came out in the 2nd half, they played hard, but they were still in foul trouble, and shots were not falling. In the last few minutes of the game, Greenfield caught fire, hitting multiple 3's and cutting the game to single digits. But they just caught fire too late and ran out of time.

Greenfield ended up getting State Championship Runner-up. Kirby lead Greenfield in points in the State Championship Game; he finished with 27pts. Through Greenfield did not get the outcome they expected, they played hard, and everyone was very proud. Coach Rob Salter’s words in the locker room were, “You guys played hard and well, I’m very proud of the effort you guys gave today.”
