The 24-year-old safety Damar Hamlin tackled Bengals WR Tee Higgins in the opening period of the game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals, knocking him to the ground. After the tackle, Hamlin got to his feet, took two steps, and then fell to the ground. Higgins was not harmed.
However, Hamlin was. CPR was used to resuscitate Hamlin's heartbeat after he suffered a cardiac arrest. Then, in critical condition, he was brought to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. His status was disclosed by the team, and the information provided was more open-minded than usual N.F.L. injury bulletins.
Football was irrelevant Monday night when Hamlin, who was struggling for his life, left the stadium in an ambulance. The Bengals and Bills' important game for playoff seeding was suddenly unimportant.
Hamlin's health became a top priority for players, coaches, the league, and fans everywhere.
Three days after the accident, Hamlin has made a “remarkable recovery” doctors say. He has shown that he appears to be neurologically intact while still being in serious condition. He is making steady improvement although his lungs are still healing. Hamlin has posted various twitter posts following the Bills win against the Patriots on Thursday and has been conscious and speaking with his family.
