The President, Joe Biden, has lowered people's student debt by $10,000 for people who make under a $125,000 salary per year, and people with Pell Grants can get up to $20,000 off if they qualify, according to the New York Times.
People have a lot of different thoughts on this. Mr. Parker, our new history teacher at Greenfield, said “Yes [it will be beneficial] because it will help thousands of borrowers, however it doesn’t do anything about the high cost of college.”
He also said that it might cause some problems because a lot of people have fully paid off their student loans and they might not feel like it is fair if others get to pay less, and they had to pay the full price. Parker was also concerned that some of these people might start lawsuits over this.
Also, a lot of people have a lot more than $10,000 in student debt, so while it helps them, it does not completely solve their problem. Student debt relief is a good thing, but more can be done to help people be able to go to college and not have debt for years after.
