Best of Wilson: Marty's Barbecue

by Ethan Carraway

"Best of Wilson" is an eight-part series that aims to highlight local businesses, cultural icons, and important institutions in the city of Wilson and its environs. Each week, a member of The Knight's Post staff will choose a location to write on in an effort to draw attention to what makes Wilson "Wiltson."

For years, the Wilson barbeque market has been run by two major family restaurants, Bill’s and Parker’s Barbeque. They had a legendary rivalry, but ever since the late Bill Ellis passed away, the new competitor in town is Marty’s barbeque.

The restaurant is run by the same family as Bill’s, with a new face, location, and marketing plan. It was originally owned mainly by Lawrence Ellis until he passed away from COVID in late September of 2021. The business was received by the family where Lawrence's wife, Wanda Ellis, and their son Marty Ellis now keep the business going.

Even though it is a sad story for all, the food hasn’t changed. The selection on the menu is large, with options of fried chicken, steak, fries, pulled pork (barbeque), and the fan-favorite dessert, banana pudding. Also, you cannot forget the amazing hush puppies that are served as a side with almost every meal.

It’s sad to see such a great family business get knocked down on one knee, but I’m sure that even with this setback, Marty’s will become better than ever.
