9th-11th grades plan trip to Charleston

by Zach Lozevski

This upcoming Thursday March 31, Upper School Grades 9 through 11 will leave on a field trip to Charleston, South Carolina. This trip is a joint effort of Mrs. Powell’s planning and her connections with the travel company, Holbrook Tours, which will be organizing the packed itinerary. The trip will have loads of stuff to do, and we are highly grateful of Mrs. Powell’s diligent planning.

There are also loads of questions people have been asking about this trip, and I would like to clear some of that up in a Q&A.

ZL: Why did we move from the previous locations of Baltimore and Washington D.C. to Charleston?

MP: The simple answer is Covid restrictions and flexibility, it would be very difficult to plan a trip while accommodating to the strict Covid restrictions in those areas. It is also more planned out and easier with Holbrook Tours which she is working with.

ZL: How many students are they taking, how many teachers, what buses are we taking there?

MP: As many students that sign up can come, unlike the previous plan to Baltimore, which had a limited number of students. This has allowed for more students to come and connect together. Fortunately, we are going to take two charter buses to Charleston.

ZL: What should we bring to the trip and what time should we arrive?

MP: Make sure to bring money (just in case), clothes, and food for the picnic at 11:45. Also make sure to eat breakfast before, as it will be a long bus ride. You should be at Greenfield at around 6:00 AM, as we plan to leave at 6:30 AM.

ZL: What do we plan to do when we get there, what is the itinerary?

MP: We plan to do many action packed activities. On the first day, we plan to go to the Charleston Tea Plantation on a mini tour at 1:00 PM, then visit the Angel Oak Tree at 3:30 PM, then check into our hotel at 4:30 PM. After changing or showering, we plan to eat dinner at 5:30 PM at Hyman’s which serves great seafood. Then after eating, at 7:30 PM we plan to go to the Ghost Tour and return to the hotel at 9:00 PM. For the next day, we will have a great breakfast at 7:00 AM, and go to a cruise ship at 9:30 AM to Fort Sumter then have Chick Fil A at noon. We will later go as a group to the Aquarium at 12:45 PM, Carriage Ride at 3:15 PM, do a campus tour of the College of Charleston at 4:30, eat a pizza dinner at 6:15 PM, and return to the hotel at 9:30 PM. On the last day, we will have hot breakfast again at 7:00 AM, then go to the eco tour on 9:00 AM, go to the amazing USS Yorktown aircraft carrier at 2:00 PM, and leave at 3:30 PM, make a pit stop and return home at 10:00 PM.

While the deadline for signing up for the field trip is already over, I would still highly recommend this trip and I am highly excited to bond with my classmates and peers, and hope you are, too.
